2024 Outlook:
Overview
The Pittsburgh Steelers are a team to be cautious about this year. The signs are clear—this team seems lost, especially on offense. Their attack is hanging by a thread, relying heavily on George Pickens, Najee Harris, and Jalen Warren. The pressure on these key players is immense, mainly because the supporting cast isn't strong, and they'll face some of the toughest competition in the league.
While the Steelers' defense is formidable, especially with Patrick Queen joining forces with Minkah Fitzpatrick and TJ Watt, the real issue is their offense. They struggle to put points on the board, and the uncertainty around their quarterback situation only adds to the confusion. Despite the talent on defense, the team's overall lack of cohesion, chemistry, and identity is glaring.
Facing divisional opponents like the Browns, Ravens, and Bengals twice each, it's hard to see this team finding success. This could very well be Mike Tomlin's first losing season. The team seems hastily assembled, with too many changes, including a new quarterback, new schemes, and a coaching staff that isn't on the same page.
In the end, there are just too many unknowns and too much instability. If you think this team will succeed, you might be overlooking the massive challenges they face. Change can be good, but the Steelers have taken on too much at once, and it’s likely to lead to their downfall this season.
Fantasy Impact
In fantasy football, the Pittsburgh Steelers are largely a team to avoid, with a few notable exceptions. In redraft formats, I'm steering clear of almost everyone except George Pickens. I’m out on Najee Harris, Jalen Warren, Russell Wilson, and Justin Fields. The only player I'm interested in is George Pickens, mainly because he's projected to see significant volume. While it might not always be quality volume, the sheer amount makes him a viable fantasy option. I anticipate he could average 15 to 20 points per game. With the Steelers lacking reliable targets, Pickens is poised to thrive, offering production similar to Devonta Smith or Jalen Waddle. While he may not reach the elite level of an AJ Brown or Justin Jefferson, he’s a solid WR2 option.
In dynasty formats, I’m still in on George Pickens, but I’m also backing Justin Fields. Fields has a chance to succeed in Pittsburgh in a way he didn’t in Chicago. The Bears gave him some time, and if you look at the numbers, he wasn’t performing poorly—it’s just that Chicago’s struggles went beyond Fields alone. Now, with a better and more experienced coaching staff in Pittsburgh, I believe Fields can develop into a strong long-term asset.
For IDP (Individual Defensive Player) formats, the Steelers are a goldmine. Minkah Fitzpatrick, TJ Watt, and Patrick Queen are standout options, and their defense as a whole is top-notch. If you’re in an IDP league, Pittsburgh’s defense will put up significant points.
In summary, while I’m generally out on the Steelers as a team, I’m selectively in on a few players depending on the format. When drafting, approach Steelers players with caution. This team is shaky and unlikely to find much success this season, so you'll need to identify the bright spots to achieve fantasy success.
