The Houston Texans have a lot to be excited about heading into the 2023 season. They have a tremendous core of young stars in 2022 draftees John Metchie and Dameon Pierce. 2023 second overall pick C.J Stroud and third overall pick Will Anderson. The Texans shelled out big bucks for veterans such as Dalton Schultz and Robert Woods to mentor WR Nico Collins. And the Texans brought back fan favorite Texans linebacker DeMeco Ryans to be their head coach. Last season was definitely a rebuilding year for Houston, but in the midst of a weak division, do the Texans look to challenge for a playoff spot already?

C.J Stroud had a tremendous 2022 season at Ohio State in which he passed for a ridiculous line of 3688/ 41/ 6 ( his 2021 line was even better ) and immediately has pro-ready weapons such as TE Dalton Schultz, a rookie QB’s best friend, and WR John Metchie, playing with a lot to prove after his knee injury and beating leukemia. Dameon Pierce looked like a diamond in the rough during his time as a starter, rushing for 90+ yards in five of his first nine career games. To lighten the load the Texans signed Devin Singletary away from Buffalo. It’ll be interesting how the Texans deploy these backs, possibly with Pierce doing more first and second down work, with Singletary on third downs? Don't forget special teams savant Rex Burkhead to still get his looks as well to further muddy this backfield.

As for passing game targets, how can you possibly predict the talent gap from Davis Mills to Stroud? Even on a bad team with a bad defense, Mills only threw 479 passes. Gone are Brandin Cooks and his 93 targets, Chris Moore and his 74 targets, and Jordan Akins and his 54 targets…. You get the point. The Texans receivers are playing on a blank canvas. Pencil in Metchie for the Cooks looks, Schultz, to earn the Akins targets, and Robert Woods for the Chris Moore role. Rookie receivers Tank Dell and Xaiver Hutchinson have an opportunity to make a name for themselves in the offense that lacks a solidified #1 pass catcher.

Defensively the Texans will have the fingerprints of DeMeco Ryan’s impressive San Francisco 49ers defense. Matt Burke, the Dolphins DC from 2017 and 2018 heads up this unit that has 3rd overall pick Will Anderson and tremendous second-year DBs Jalen Pitre and Derek Stingley Jr. Hassan Ridgeway and Jimmie Ward have followed their former coach in Ryans to further lock down the defensive. And although this unit is on a losing team, they have a lot of strong IDP contributors such as Christian Kirksey, Desmond King, and Sheldon Rankins. This unit will rush the passer and make it difficult for opposing quarterbacks with Pitre and Stingley playing center field.

The Texans are only a few years removed from being a contender for the AFC title. They have the perfect mix of young stars, cagey veterans, and a Head Coach looking to work to cement himself as one of the leagues best. If all falls right for Houston, they could be the surprise of the NFL in 2023 and a division contender for the next few years.
